Unveiling Ancient Climates with Phytoliths: Insights from the Kashmir Himalaya
Dr Irfan Rashid – Department of Botany, University of Kashmir

Temporal vegetation patterns provide key insights into past climatic shifts, and phytoliths are a powerful tool in uncovering these secrets. Researchers from Kashmir University have reconstructed vegetation dynamics during the last glacial period using phytolith assemblages from the Wanihama loess-paleosol sequence (LPS) near Srinagar, Kashmir Himalaya.

Their findings reveal a warm and humid Phase (ca. 42–39 ka): the dominance of broad-leaved vegetation and sparse conifers. Transition to Cold Climate (Post ca. 39 ka): increase in conifers and grasses, with cold phases continuing until ca. 14 ka, accompanied by vegetation decline. Warm & Dry Conditions (Towards the top of LPS): An increased presence of C4 grasses indicates a warming trend.

Notably, these cold events align with climatic instabilities in the Atlantic Ocean, showing how global phenomena influenced the Asian climate. The study highlights the reliability of phytoliths as a proxy for reconstructing vegetation and climate, adding a new dimension to our understanding of the Kashmir Himalaya’s paleoenvironment.
