The 14th International Meeting on Phytolith Research will take place in Barcelona (Spain), at the Institució Milà i Fontanals de Recerca en Humanitats, Spanish National Research Council (IMF-CSIC), from the 14th to the 19th of July 2025.
Contributions are welcome on any aspect of archaeology, agronomy, geoarchaeology, paleoanthropology, paleobiogeography, paleoclimatology, paleoecology, pedology, plant physiology, systematics and evolution, and taphonomy, insofar as they involve research on phytoliths.
We strive for the 14th IMPR to become a meeting point for early career phytolith researchers. For that reason, in addition to regular oral and poster sessions the meeting will include a ‘storytelling’ session for students and several hands-on workshops.

- 30th September 2024: abstract submission closes
- 30th November 2024: notification of abstract acceptance
- 1st February 2025: registration opens
- 31st May 2025: early-bird registration ends
- 30th June 2025: registration ends
Pre-registration and abstract submission
Participants who wish to present are welcome to send their proposal for an oral presentation or poster at their earliest convenience, but no later than 30th September 2024, through the following form:

Abstracts should be max. 250 words in length and include the list of authors, author affiliation(s) and 4-6 keywords. Abstract submissions are limited to one oral presentation and one poster per presenting author.
We would like to ask researchers who are planning to attend but not present to also pre-register at the link above so the Organising Committee can estimate the number of participants and set the conference fees (which will be announced in the 2nd circular).
We are considering applying for a Wenner-Gren Foundation Conference and Workshop Grant in late 2024, which would help cover the participation costs for scholars who might not otherwise be able to attend. If you would be interested in receiving economic assistance to participate in the 14th IMPR let us know in the pre-registration and abstract submission form (please note that these funds are contingent on funding from the Wenner-Gren foundation and that priority will be given to early career researchers who actively participate in the conference).

Why IMF-CSIC
IMF-CSIC is a research institute located in Barcelona’s city centre. Research at IMF-CSIC focuses in the humanities and social sciences, with an internationally renowned expertise in archaeological sciences. Phytolith research has a long standing tradition at IMF-CSIC, starting in the late 1990s. Currently, IMF-CSIC hosts three experienced phytolith researchers (Débora Zurro, Marta Portillo and Juan José García-Granero) and a vibrant cohort of pre- and post-doctoral researchers working in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe.
The 14th IMPR will be hosted at the adjoining CSIC’s Researcher’s Residence, which has an auditorium with capacity for 110 people that can be expanded to accommodate up to 152 people, as well as an amphitheatre (42 people), several meeting rooms (10-30 people), a showroom for displaying posters and a space for coffee breaks.

Accommodation at a discount rate will be offered at Residència d’Investigadors (the conference venue) and Residència Pere Felip Monlau (5’ walk). More information about accommodation will be issued along with the 2nd circular.
